Dutchess County is located in the State of New York, in the Hudson Valley. The 2010 census lists the population as 297,488. The county seat is Poughkeepsie.

Prior to the 1960s, Dutchess County was primarily agricultural. Currently, the southern part (from Poughkeepsie south) of the county has developed into a largely residential area, suburban character, with many of its residents commuting to jobs in New York City. The northern region of the county is still very much rural with large farmlands. At the same time vacation homes  were used during the summer and on weekends by New York City residents.

Dutchess County is located in southeastern New York State, between the Hudson River on its west and the Connecticut border on the east, about halfway between the capital of Albany and the City of New York. I-84 is the only interstate highway in the county, and the county’s main roads are US Route 9, Taconic Parkway, Routes 55, 44, and NY Route 22. The prestigious institutions of Vassar College and the Culinary Institute of America are located in Dutchess County.
